Property Fees: The Hidden Costs of Living in Mississauga

While out speaking with residents across Mississauga, I’ve heard frustration about the fees and fines people can face simply for managing and enjoying their own property. Whether it’s parking on your driveway, removing a tree, or keeping a pet, residents shouldn’t feel like they’re constantly being charged for everyday decisions on their own property.

Mississauga collects standard fees for a number of services and programs. But residents should not be charged punitive fees for the basic use and management of their own property.

Take apron parking, for example. Residents can face fines for parking on the boulevard portion of their driveway, even when they are not obstructing the road or sidewalk. Removing a tree over 15 centimetres can also come with a $400 fee before the tree can be removed. Pet owners face licensing fees and penalties if they don't keep their registration current.

These are the hidden costs of living in Mississauga that unfairly target residents for the use and enjoyment of their own properties and pets.

As Mayor, I will initiate a full review of Mississauga's fees and by-laws to identify punitive fees on things like apron parking, tree removal and pet licensing. Residents deserve to know that the fees they are paying serve a legitimate purpose, rather than simply adding to the cost of living. Affordability isn't just about the biggest bills families pay. It's also about the smaller costs that add up over time.

Mississauga residents should not be penalized for using and enjoying their own property. I will work to eliminate unnecessary fines and fees and make living in Mississauga more affordable.
