School Safety: Getting Kids to School Shouldn’t Feel Dangerous

There’s something every parent should be able to take for granted: when their child heads to school in the morning, they should be able to get there safely. Whether they’re walking, biking, taking the bus, or being dropped off, getting to the school door shouldn’t mean navigating speeding cars or dangerous intersections.

That’s why Mississauga needs a stronger approach to school-zone safety. We can make our streets safer for students and families through better design, infrastructure, and targeted enforcement.

As Mayor, I will implement a School Zone Safety Plan focused on the areas around our schools. This will include making certain streets pedestrian-only where appropriate, increasing enforcement of speeding and traffic violations, improving crossing infrastructure and lighting, and coordinating police patrols during peak school hours.

We also need to make it clear that speeding and dangerous driving around schools will not be ignored. I will support increased enforcement of speeding and traffic violations in school zones, focused on the times and locations where it is most needed.

Infrastructure matters too. Better crossings, improved lighting, and safer street design can help prevent dangerous situations before they happen. These investments can make school zones safer every day, not just when enforcement is present.

Where policing is needed, it should be targeted and data-driven. Coordinating patrol presence during peak school hours can help address specific safety concerns and make better use of existing resources.

Every family should feel confident that their children can get to and from school safely. Our approach should focus on prevention, better infrastructure, and smart enforcement.

As Mayor, I will make school-zone safety a priority and work to create safer streets around our schools so students, parents, and families can get where they need to go safely.
